Dear OSI SAF user,

As announced in a previous service message (#1419 on 7 July 2017), file formats of some OSI SAF radiative fluxes products are going to evolve by the end of 2017 . This concerns : MSG Downward Longwave Irrandiance (OSI-303) and Solar Surface Irradiance (OSI-304) and GOES-E Downward Longwave Irrandiance (OSI-305) and Solar Surface Irradiance (OSI-306).

  • Current NetCDF distribution on Ifremer FTP server will switch from NetCDF3 to NetCDF4 : external compression will be replaced by an internal compression but the file content will not change. NetCDF4 files are already available on Ifremer FTP server in the same directories as the NetCDF3 ones. NetCDF4 files have the same names as NetCDF3 ones but without .bz2. We invite you to use these NetCDF4 files instead of the NetCDF3 ones. We plan to stop the NetCDF3 operational production at the end of 2017.
  • Current GRIB distribution on EUMETCast will switch from GRIB to NetCDF4 : each NetCDF file will include both SSI and DLI (instead of distinct GRIB files for SSI and DLI). NetCDF4 files are going to be available, on top of GRIB (on EUMETCast-Africa and Europe), on EUMETCast Europe, in several weeks. Waiting for this parallel dissemination on EUMETCast Europe, users are invited to use the NetCDF4 products already available on Ifremer FTP server to get prepared to this new format. We plan to stop the GRIB operational production at the end of 2017.

The products are available in NetCDF4 format on Ifremer FTP server (Users rights are provided on request in the www.osi-saf.org registration process) :

MSG hourly and daily DLI and SSI : ftp://eftp.ifremer.fr/cersat-rt/project/osi-saf/data/radflux/l3/msg3/

GOES-E hourly and daily DLI and SSI : ftp://eftp.ifremer.fr/cersat-rt/project/osi-saf/data/radflux/l3/goes13/

At the end of the year (precise date to be defined), NetCDF4 will be the unique format available for MSG and GOES-E radiative fluxes (DLI and SSI), hourly and daily, both on EUMETCast-Europe, EUMETCast-Africa and Ifremer FTP server.

We will inform you as soon as the NetCDF4 files are available on EUMETCast Europe.
